How to boot from an external DVD drive

When the computer boots up, it looks for the operating system files it needs to boot. As it does so, it searches in several different places for the files it needs and when it finds them it continues the boot process, ignoring the other devices connected to the computer. If you want your computer to boot from an external device, such as a DVD drive, you need to enter the configuration of the computer and change its boot order.

Step 1

Turn off the computer and remove the power cord. Replace the power cord and press the “Power” button to restart it.

Step 2

Watch the screen carefully a message about the configuration of the computer. Most computers use one of the function keys, which are aligned at the top of the keyboard, to access the installation utility of the computer. However, each manufacturer uses a different key. For example, HP computers generally use the F1 or F10 key, while many Dells use the F12 key.

Step 3

Press the appropriate function key to enter the computer’s configuration program. Then scroll through the list of options until “start order” appears. The exact location of the boot order option varies from one manufacturer to another; however, it is often found in the Advanced menu.

Step 4

Select “USB Devices” and press the up arrow key until the device is first in the boot order list. This will force the computer to search the external DVD drive for the first time when it boots up.

Step 5

Use the “Esc” key to exit the configuration menu. Choose the option “Save Settings and Exit” and let the computer reboot. Now it will boot from the external DVD drive.
